Fell Running/Orienteering Shoes
Fell Running/Orienteering Shoes
These shoes are popular not least because of their low weight and flexibility. Durability for fell running or orienteering in open country is good but they can suffer premature damage when used for aggressive running in forests with extensive brashings on the ground. All these shoes have rubber studded outsoles in a variety of configurations. EVA midsoles provide cushioning. More recent developments have seen the addition of an external rubber rand around the shoe to increase durability and provide additional support to the heel cup.
Rubber Studded Orienteering Shoes
Rubber Studded Orienteering Shoes
Very popular with orienteers of all abilities, the uppers can range from basic nylon re-inforced PVC to more supple and durable synthetic materials. The uppers are tending to be made of hydrophobic materials thereby reducing the additional weight effect of running in wet conditions as the material doesn't want to absorb the water. These shoes come in a variety of widths with the use of narrow, regular and wide lasts. Rubber studded shoes offer the softest running conditions when hard paths are being used extensively.
Metal Studded Orienteering Shoes
Metal Studded Orienteering Shoes
These shoes have become more popular in the last few years, they usually have the same rubber studded outsoles as mentioned above but with a small, hard , durable steel stud inserted into the centre of the rubber and protruding only a millimetre or two. The metal studs can give improved grip on such surfaces as mossy covered rock, fallen trees and icy paths in winter! As I found out as asdown forest a few January's ago. The uppers are essentially the same as the standard rubber studded shoes above.
